On July 5th I turned 31. I do not feel very sentimental about this, though on the day itself I did feel quite moved. Not as much by my age – it’s just a number – rather because I allowed myself to slow down and feel into how much has transpired over the past while. If you’d told me I’d be living here, in The Hague, with my Monstera Deliciosa plant-babies, a year ago…I would not have believed you. If you’d told me 6 months ago that I’d be finding a really good flow with work, self-care and shifting my mindset, drastically, I would have felt unsure about the truth of it all.
Yet here I am. A year wiser and gentler.
June brought some big leaps and growth for me, in life in general and in business. I have not shared a lot about what it takes to nourish a doTERRA business into being, but know some of you are keen to learn a bit more about my perspective and ideas. So when my dear mentor, Renee, asked me some questions about what had changed for me to show up differently over the past months, I felt keen to share my answers with you here.
For they make me so proud of where I find myself today, so excited about where I am headed, and so grateful for all who support me, believe in me, and are on this journey of sharing health-ness with others.
Q: You’ve recently started to take massive action in your business. What has shifted within you to start applying the knowledge acquired whilst being a student of this business during the past years?
A: I burned out last year whilst/after working in a very stressful job in Vancouver. I was very focused on getting my Permanent Residency in Canada and when it became clear this was not in the cards for me (yet), I moved back to the Netherlands. This was a massive shift for me, as I’d been travelling since 2010 and had been in (and out of) Canada for the past 5 years.
I returned to my home country and was overcome by emotion, fear and old belief patterns that needed untangling. I found myself exhausted, hurting and nearly broke. I had a hunger to share and create, yet zero energy to get anything moving. Even going out to get groceries felt like too much on most days.
This was a very challenging time for me, as I ran out of savings and had to borrow money and ask for support. I felt really dependent on other people while being in a healing mode and it made me feel quite stuck. I wanted to move ahead in serving others, but while serving myself it could not be my focus.
My oils and the supplements played a big role in my grounding, re-balancing and arriving in the present. I hadn’t realized there was a whole new layer of healing and processing to explore with these natural remedies before being able to bring them to others, once more. In deeper authenticity, with more trust and love for these brown bottles than ever before.
As I regained some strength and inspiration, I felt frustrated with myself. I was sharing nuggets of wisdom and resources with fellow doTERRA partners and had been a student of the business for a while, but never truly did all that it takes to create ‘the Popcorn effect’ in my own oil business.
Just before attending the European doTERRA Convention in London in May, I started a new job in the nutrition field. I took on this position to help me cover my basic needs while growing my doTERRA business and to refresh my nutrition knowledge. For the first months I felt overwhelmed knowing that I was still running short on money and had to ask for help to cover rent.
I was experiencing a lot of friction/contrast, yet also started seeing opportunity.
I began to realize that the only part of my income I can fully control, is me really leaning in to my doTERRA business.
Friends were asking me how I was doing and I was eager to share successes versus rambling about my mental blocks and how I would one day overcome them. It was time to flower the seeds planted and to ride new waves of belief. I knew this would be my ‘before’ in a year or so from now.
I knew that one day I’d tell this story and that it would be an inspiration to others and myself.
I vowed to never find myself in a situation again in which I’d have to rely on anyone else to be able to take care of myself. And after 7 years of travelling around, I also realized there were some beliefs around money that I had to shift. That in order to be of service, I will need more moolah. That it’s not either/or, but this AND also that.
Something else that really supported me to move things forward and get into momentum were some close friends, who reminded me of my abilities and my purpose on earth as a healer. Renee picked up on my intentions and energy and offered support, which also made me want to rise up.
By opening up my energy to noticing opportunity (hint: it’s all around!) I started meeting more and more like-minded people that helped me feel seen and understood and fueled my fire for growing into who I am meant to be even more.
Ways I shifted into motion
First of all, in May I started to plan my classes for two months ahead and to look for referral partners to work with to host classes for me.
I zoned in on the fact that preparation is half the work, as is amazing follow-up and staying in touch with people in the long run. This is a relationship business, in which you’re planting seeds in people you care about their subconscious, until they become a yes.
From Alice Nichols I learned to not only focus on numbers, rather to take a sheet of paper and colour in a heart for every person who joins my team, for it’s another life enriched. It literally brought more heart into my business to bring in this practice. I now put my intentions, goals, and empty hearts on my wall each month to look at, visualize, and colour in as I beam with gratitude and send out healing vibes for every person who welcomes oils and my giggles into their experience.
The past two months I was in my back office, daily, to check out what was happening and visualizing what would be possible to bring into manifestation. I looked at who to follow up with or reach out to on the daily, always brainstorming about other people who can benefit from oils and support.
I stopped beating around the bush and started asking people very straight forward if they are feeling aligned with getting essential oils into their life and if I can support them with that. I started getting a yes more often and stopped fearing the no. For I realized often that no really was a ‘not yet’ and it is nothing personal.
Speaking of which, I started to get out of my own way. Big time. I am driving my business, but it is not about me.
That truly is a weight off my (ego’s) shoulders, hahaha.
I also listened to Eric Worre’s Go Pro, Alice Nichols podcast or – one of my favourites that I tune into before each class or 1-on-1 I go into – Deb Erickson’s Binaural Affirmations (use headphones!) on my way to and from work. This would give me so much inspiration, new tools and verbiage, and excitement to work on my business after a day of work.
Everything that I do turned into something that supports my business and the serving of others, which made even the hard or boring feel a lot lighter!
I also started gaining more believe through attending events (yes, they ARE a must!): the European convention in London and the post-convention doTERRA day in the Netherlands. The latter gave me more tools to work with people in Dutch, the first made some things click now that I am in a country where I can work freely and am not concerned about not being legally allowed to work outside of my workpermit. I was in the right place to start implement what I was absorbing and did so with new energy and belief.
Finally, a big thing that I did differently, was to really check in with my energy at all times. I did not let go of my belief of being able to reach this goal until the very last hours of the month. Whereas before I would have said, oh well.. looks like it’s not gonna happen, I entered flow and stuck with the feeling that it truly is possible to fly beyond Elite. I know that to be true.
This is vision in action, which goes beyond vision in rationalization.
Q. What parts of sharing doTERRA bring me the absolute most joy?
A. Oh goodness, there’s so many!
- Witnessing people having a ‘wow’ moment, really seeing things click for them – whether when having an oil experience or when they learn that there are ways to create financial stability outside of a 9 to 5.
- Integrating my personal and professional experiences and knowledge and realizing my journey serves a purpose… one that I don’t yet fully comprehend but that is re-humanizing me and shows me that I have a lot more to offer than I think. I am not who I was even a month ago and am so keen to become who I am turning into!
- Community: bringing like-minded people together, sharing real stories, helping others understand their self-healing capacities as well showing them what options are available outside of the regular 9-5 to create a life worth living.
Witnessing my own rising and growth. My desire to help others gain momentum and step into their truth and power is what is really driving me right now. I want to live in integrity with what I am helping others to do and Elite being the building block of one’s organization I want to lay a solid brick for all of us to work from. That also means being smarter about systems, awareness of where to put energy, writing shorter emails (haha) & really: lay a foundation that is duplicable and gets people excited!
Q. What did you learn about yourself in taking on the goal of going Elite in one month and ranking Executive on the way?
A. How much fun it is to work on your mindset, challenge beliefs, and take super consistent action so that I can really see what does and also what doesn’t work for people. Witnessing your own evolution is so inspiring!
Tip: ask attendees or hosts for feedback: how was the energy, pace, what was unclear? Implement changes as soon as possible and track the results.
For example: I had to make it a lot clearer how much value there is in sitting down with me for a 1-on-1 Wellness Consult and tap into my knowledge on a wide variety of topics. I never really did these consults properly before, and did not highlight well enough what amazing support I offer this way and how it is a key reason why people choose to work with me.
Once I focused on this more strongly and really ignited the fun of providing personalized recommendations, my fear of coming across salesy completely shifted into an energy of service. This also makes it a lot easier to upsell when I feel it is in people’s best interest and really shifts the energy when objections arise. Non-attachment to someone ordering also helps a lot, I truly held space for people to come in when they’re ready, but learned to let go of the chase.
This helped create healthier boundaries and more sustainability moving ahead.
I also learned:
Magic happens when you show up, especially at times when you really don’t feel like it. (This aligns with what Justin Harrison says: You can build your business full-time or part-time, but not sometime!)
It is through Grit and showing up imperfectly that you get to move ahead a lot faster.
Whether building your business is easy or hard is completely up to you.
Get excited, sprinkle it around, be contagious.
- It is safe to be seen. I am able to help others and people want to hear my story. By keeping myself small and stuck I am doing you all a really big disservice. I did my first Facebook Live in June and finally hopped onto Instagram stories to chat a bit. This was a massive block of mine and I was amazed how much joy I felt and how freeing it was to express myself and offer education. This also brings me in closer alighment with what I stand for: show up, imperfectly, to connect with community about what matters. Try it!
- I allowed myself to not have to know all the answers. And realized that really, rather I don’t, so that others become self-sufficient as they use the resources I share with them. This took away another block of mine. The fear of being unable to be present for everyone or not being able to meet their needs; offering a wonderful Wellness Consult and personalized Daily Wellness Protocol takes away a lot of these needs. Provide incredible tools from the get-go, so that your customers and advocates can empower themselves.
- The more I load myself with the knowing that it is in everyone’s best interest to go home with a wholesale membership after a class or 1-on-1, the less skepticism or criticism I encounter. We create our own reality and attract projections or acceptance according to our beliefs, so clearly!
- Keep on reaching out and inviting in. Sometimes it takes 6 months, or 2 years. When you show interest and stay in touch, people just might jump in when you least expect them to. Don’t make assumptions, hold space and remain open. We all have our own timeline.
That’s about it for now! I am so excited for all that is to come and for working with some new leaders on my team.
For my Inspired Doterra Building crew: thank you so much for cheering me on, I can not wait to see you all in September and celebrate Renee walk the stage! It feels wonderful to be connected with you all and to also make myself be seen amongst our team. Thank you all for always being so generous and for welcoming me in!
P.S. Are you curious about everthing oily and what I’m about?
Let’s hop on a call and make this your ‘before’.
It’s like Pringles with these beautiful natural remedies (without the nasty MSG!): once you pop [the cap], you can’t stop & you’ll never look back!
